Southampton to Eastbourne by Train

By Eastbourne Guide editors · Updated 22 October 2026

The simplest way is two Southern trains with a change at Brighton. The first leg, from Southampton Central, is the long one, about an hour and three-quarters with 21 stops; the second runs from Brighton to Eastbourne in about 40 minutes with five. The typical journey takes about 2h50 in all, and the best connections bring it down to about 2h45.

The Brighton change

On the typical run there are about 25 minutes at Brighton between the Southampton train arriving and the Eastbourne train leaving. That margin covers a moderately late arrival from Southampton Central, and since Southern’s Brighton to Eastbourne trains run about every half hour, a missed connection there costs half an hour rather than the evening.

Departures from Southampton Central ran about every half hour on the weekday we checked, from 05:49 to 22:20, mostly at 20 and 50 minutes past the hour, so you rarely need to plan the day around the train. The first connection, the 05:49, reaches Eastbourne at about 08:40. Watch the end of the evening, though: the 22:20 was the last connection and does not reach Eastbourne until about ten past one in the morning.

Via Clapham Junction, or by road

A different pattern changes at Clapham Junction instead, and on the timetable we checked it took almost exactly as long, about 2h52, with departures as early as 04:49 and 05:52, then roughly hourly from 08:00 to 21:58. Variants changing at Basingstoke and Clapham Junction took about three hours, and early ones through London Waterloo or East Croydon took longer still. The Brighton route remains the simpler choice, with one change and Southern trains on both legs.

Driving is the one thing that beats it: 87 miles via the A27 takes about 2h10, some 40 minutes less than the train.

Arriving

The last stretch, from Eastbourne station to Terminus Road, is an eight-minute walk of about 600 metres.
